April 19 Rep Council Agenda

Napa Solano Central Labor Council update!

Siblings we have been very busy the past months identifying, meeting with, interviewing and endorsing this year’s slate of June primary candidates. We will now be starting our field program and will be looking for our affiliates to step up to the plate and once again show why the endorsement from our Napa Solano Siblings is so sought after!
Be on the lookout for a variety of ways to contribute to our primary campaign. One on one contact at worksite visits and personal Letters to your members from affiliate leaders are the most effective ways to begin a campaign. Justin will be providing you with a schedule in a couple of days and it is critical that your members are provided with several options to participate. I have attached a copy of our endorsements and they are also at the bottom of this blast.
We will be receiving our lists from the Fed and need to know if any affiliates want to opt out of our program. Please contact Justin or myself as soon as possible if this is the case.
Now that the pre endorsement convention is behind up we now have a final slate of candidate that the Napa Solano Central Labor Council has officially endorsed.

Now it is time to go to work.

Spring Salute 2016
Siblings, well by all accounts Friday nights 6th annual Napa Solano Central Labor Council spring salute was a smashing success! To the Casual Observer it looked like it went off without a hitch but those that were part of the organizational committee know otherwise 🙂
A special shout-out to Firefighters local 1186 who literally pulled your beleaguered executive director out of the fire and provided us with a BBQ that was out of this world.
And we also want to thank our Executive Board members and volunteers who stepped up to the plate to make it all happen. Painters, Teamsters #315, Operating Engineers 3, Carpenters, Building Trades, CSEA and of course our new field coordinator Justin Bailey for pulled off a wonderful event. I know there were more and Justin will be sending out a blast thanking all involved and also a final report.

I received a number of phone calls and emails over the weekend congratulating us on our efforts, and it was a great Team effort. Everyone was impressed that we were able to have Congressmen Mike Thompson and John Garamendi Assembly members Bill Dodd and Jim Frazier as well as California Superintendent of Public Education Tom Torlakson to pass out the awards and certificates to our worthy Siblings who we honored at the event. I have listed the winners at the bottom of the blast.
Also a shout out to G Anthony Phillips for the wonderful program honoring our Spring Salute Award winners and Jonathan Gordon for taking pictures. I think everybody agrees that the program we put together was awesome although a lot of the pictures are dark because of the lighting in the museum. I actually asked them to turn the lights off to keep things mellow and also the spotlight off of us old timers on the stage.
We will keep you up-to-date on the final numbers and once again we would like to reach out and thank everyone who had anything to do with the event and thank you for your continued efforts in making the Napa Solano Central Labor Council one of the most active labor councils in California. Hats off to everyone!

Strike averted
By now you have all heard that the Strike at the Maritime Academy and their 22 sister campuses was averted! Many thanks to all of our four State Reps: Senator Wolk and Assembly Members Bonilla, Frazier and Dodd for all writing letters in support of our Siblings. Great work by the local Leaders at the California Faculty Association!
CWA strike sanction:
Well one averted and another to take its place? Our Siblings at CWA has requested and been granted Strike Sanction by the Napa Solano Central Labor Council Executive Board in their struggles getting a contract with ATT. Let’s hope that we can avert another strike, they are after all failure, as their leadership continues to negotiate. We do however stand ready to hit the streets and support our Siblings.

  • http://www.cta.yourvoterguide.com/#/search – all politics are local and, if you’d like to know who the teachers in your community would like for you to vote for, go here!  All you have to do is enter your address and that site will deliver a personalized voting guide
  • www.cta.org/optout – would you like to know more about the opt-out movement and what we can/can’t say to our parents and students about standardized testing?  Go here to find out!  Also, the testing subcommittee would like to remind us timage009hat, this year,  scores from the smarter balanced test will set the cut scores for next year, therefore, they urge to make sure that students do not opt-out this year.

Finally, would you like to know some more about the many accommodations available for the Smarter Balanced test?  This chart does a great job of breaking it down!

  • www.cta.org/social – and, finally,  a new social directory of all local chapters and departments

Day of the Teacher – is May 11, 2016, and the theme is “California Teachers: Leaders of Learning.” ESP Day is May 17, 2016. Posters and celebration resources will be going out to local chapters soon so be sure to keep an eye on your mailbox!

Vergara – CTA is expecting an appeals court decision in regards to the Vergara case. We expect a positive ruling by May 25th, 2016.  If you’d like to know more about this issue, go here!

image003Would you like to know more about restorative justice and explore just how schools can service all of our kids?

Would you like to learn how a group of committed individuals can change the world?

Have you heard about the social security offset?

If you have not, please check out this.  The inequities with educators and Social Security have been a fight for many years and this letter  discusses many of the issues facing our members as we work to overcome this inequity.  This isn’t going to be an easy fight but, together, we shall overcome!
