Sierra Vista, a soon-to-be K-8 campus on Bel Air Drive in Vacaville, should renamed after the late Ernest Kimme, the widely respected educator, civic leader and regular columnist in the Vacaville Reporter.

In the words of Ernie’s wife, Margi, at a recent school board meeting, “Ernest would be really touched by this, [and] he would also say, ‘This is too much,’ ” she added, a reference to her husband’s humility and selflessness, evinced over the years as an eighth-grade math teacher, city councilman, a member of countless city and county boards, and his ceaseless advocacy for public education in Vacaville.

“He loved Vacaville,” Stern said of her husband, who died in August at age 60. “Above that, he loved Vacaville Unified.”

That’s why we created a petition to Whit Whitman, President, Vacaville School Board, Shelly Dally, Vice-president, Vacaville School Board, and 5 others.

The long wait is nearly over. We expect the House of Representatives to vote on the new version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act by this Thursday or sooner!

The bill, S. 1177, is a bipartisan agreement between the House and Senate that will be a big improvement over current law, and we need yourhelp to make sure it passes in the House this week.

We must keep the pressure on our elected leaders to produce a bill that, when signed by the president, gives every student the opportunity, support, tools, and time to learn.
