Bill of Rights Day is Dec. 15

Educators can order materials to use in the classroom for the upcoming Bill of Rights Day, Dec. 15. Help students better understand the Bill of Rights and get detailed lesson plans on how the Bill of Rights helps guarantee individual rights. And … a great assignment for your kids leading up to that special day: Ask them to address their U.S. Senators and answer the following question: “What right(s) in the Bill of Rights are important to me and why?” Have your students go to the websites for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein and U.S. Senator Kamala Harris or send them an email at Feinstein.senate.gov and Harris.senate.gov answering that important question.

Putting the June Primary Election on the radar

Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about the June 5, 2018 statewide Primary Election although it’s six months away. With the top two primary system in California and constitutional offices up for grabs, we have a lot of work to do to elect the candidates recommended by CTA’s State Council of Education – the body of your elected representatives – who voted to endorse Gavin Newsom for Governor and Tony Thurmond for Superintendent of Public Instruction . Thurmond’s opponent – a corporate charter school supporter seeking to privatize our neighborhood public schools – has deep-pocketed supporters behind him, so it’s imperative that we emphasize early and often that Tony Thurmond is the right candidate for this critical job. Learn more about Thurmond here.

We had a successful Standard campaign!

This was a great opportunity for members to sign up without any health questions to answer.   Congratulations!

Congratulations to our December 2017 Educator of the month,  Tracy Waldrop!

Why are you an educator?  Besides the fact that I always wanted to work with kids, the main reason I work as a counselor is to help kids realize their potential.  Being there for students, watching them work through issues, and having them see that success is possible is one of my greatest joys.  Most importantly, I hope to make a difference in a student’s life and instill in them my belief that with hard work, anyone can achieve their future goals.

What do you enjoy most about your career?  The best part of my career is the students! Seeing them make personal breakthroughs in academic, social and/or emotional issues.  I also enjoy being part of a great counseling team at Jepson!

Years spend in the profession/district?  This is my 12th year in Vacaville, 14 years in the profession.

What do you do in your spare/free time?  Now that both my children are in college, I enjoy going to the gym daily, hiking with my sister, gardening, spending time with my husband and I enjoy refinishing old furniture bought at thrift stores.

What does being a member of the Vacaville Teachers Association mean to you?  The Vacaville Teachers association gives me a layer of support; that our union representatives, many of whom I work with, are there to support me.
