Congratulations to our November Educator of the Month, Kathy Pettibone

Why are you an educator? I love facilitating learning for young students. They come to school with so many unique experiences and language backgrounds; it’s fun and rewarding to guide their reading processes and learning.

What do you enjoy most about your career?  I love sharing my passion for literacy with students, parents, and teachers.  In addition, I love it when teachers share their successes and challenges with me. It helps all of us develop understanding and builds capacity for teaching and learning on our campus.

Years spent in the profession/district? I have spent thirty years in education, 2 years in Vacaville Unified.

What do you do in your spare/free time?  My free time is spent golfing with my husband, spending time with my sons and my grandson. I also enjoy horseback riding, hiking, skiing, and quilting.

What does being a member of the Vacaville Teachers Association mean to you?  VTA gives me a voice. I appreciate how VTA embraces new and experienced teachers and provides a network for helping and supporting each other as we hone our craft.

Public TV Series – ‘Inside California Education’ – Deserves the Spotlight

The inside story behind challenging, critical issues in California’s public education began airing statewide earlier this year when PBS stations throughout the Golden State premiered Inside California Education. A recent featured program highlights Lincoln Elementary School in Sanger, where an exceptionally high number of special education students mix with the general education population – participating in everything from cheerleading to academics. Keep your eyes peeled because we’ll continue to share different segments in coming issues of the CTA Insider.

Speaking of CTA’s Advocacy Agenda …

… here’s a refresher on what it’s all about: CTA conducted extensive research and acquired input from thousands of educators to hone in on the most important topics that affect teaching and learning. The result was The Public Education All California Students Deservea document that outlines proven education strategies that improve and enhance student learning, are essential to providing a quality public education to all of California’s 9 million students, build stronger local communities, and help maintain public education as the cornerstone of our democratic society. Check it out – it’s yours to use and share!
